Busy P live at Hard Miami
By Tach

Pedro Winter, or Busy P, is an iconic figure in the music industry. The French producer/DJ/mogul studied under Daft Punk and subsequently managed the group from 1996-2008; he’s been head of the wildly successful Ed Banger Records for the past 11 years. His musical experience shows in the impeccable track selection for his Hard Miami set recorded live at this years Winter Music Conference.

Though it’s a couple of months old now, this mix has been my go-to for just about everything; I figured everyone should get a chance to enjoy it. I’m also including most of the individual tracks from the mix, they’re prime examples of why French vein electro is my hands-down favorite genre both for listening and live shows. The Ed Banger crew has a strong relationship with U.S. company Hard events, they make regular appearances alongside the boys of BNR and OWSLA. Catch them at Hard Summer amidst a lineup too epic for words.

Bare & Datsik – The King Kong Experiment
By JC

Canadian Dub-Monster Troy “Datsik” Beetles (not the only DJ to name himself after his Xbox Live name, I’m sure) has had the legendary dubstep jam King Kong in his trunk and in his sets for a while- a whole year, to be exact. So why are Datsik & Bare now re-releasing a collaboration on Subhuman Records, and why are they calling it an “experiment”? The answer most likely relates to the fact that the remixes come from five different genres, a feat for any single.

Fellow Canadian Mark Instinkt and UK duo Skeptiks throw down the essential grimey dubstep retakes to keep Bare’s VIP mix company, while Terravita creates a drumstep mix  that’s guaranteed to wear out a club. Neon Steve’s Canadian-style breaks remix is one of two that slows the track down to 110 bpm, this one in particular has a hip-hop feel to it. Billy the Gent and Long Jawns took King Kong in the moombahton direction, exposing the tune’s more sexy side. Last but the polar opposite of least, Lucky Date mutates this anthem into one of THE BEST electro house tracks ever made; I wore out the minute and a half long preview over the last few weeks, and the finished version has me jumping like a middle school girl.

I know this is a lot of bass/gorilla action to handle, but I’m sure you can take it.

Mat Zo ft. Linnea Schossow – The Sky
By Tach

Given that he calls a professional violinist and a renowned painter Mum and Dad respectively, the UK’s Matan Zohar’s artistic genius may well run in his veins. The 22-year-old producer’s musical prodigiousness dates nearly back to his inception. After learning to play the guitar at age 8, Zo joined his first band at the tender age of 11; his path was diverted as electronic music caught his attention, thankfully for posterity. Zo’s productions are flawless; they’re energetic, beautiful, and most importantly unique. Not to mention he’s already put 241 tracks on Beatport and he’s barely cracked age 20.

His latest piece, The Sky, was released today on Anjunabeats. Though it’s not flashy at first glance, the TATW rip alone had me convinced I’d found one of my favorite productions of the year. The club mix is so different it’s more like a remix; no other remixes were released on the EP, nor do any seem to be in the works for now. As JC pointed out, it’s probably because “nobody had the guts to remix Mat Zo”. Zohar is a testament to the fact that true musicianship does exist among the throngs of young producers looping samples and passing them off as tracks.

Song of the year.

Miike Snow – The Wave (Thomas Gold Remix)
By Tach

It seems the task of blogging about Miike Snow remixes is akin to Sisyphus rolling his boulder up a hill. German producer Thomas Gold’s remix of Miike Snow’s The Wave, out today on Axtone, leads the latest batch. It’s the first of three remixes that will eventually appear alongside Brodinski and Style of Eye’s on the still unreleased Wave EP. My thoughts on the phenomenon:

Tach’s Brief Guide to Why Everyone is Always Remixing Miike Snow

Gold’s fortés are melodic chords and creative instrumentation (think Marsch Marsch). What’s lacking in his productions is the kind of musical “storytelling” that takes listeners on a journey. The result: tracks that are aesthetically pretty yet decisively boring, case in point Sing2Me. Many electronic artists struggle here. Glitchy synths, piano riffs, and reverberating bass do not a musician make.

Miike Snow tells wonderful stories with their songs, making full use of the lyrical advantage offered by their traditional band format. They’re wildly creative, but we EDM nuts have minds accustomed to the backflips and fireworks of synthetic instrumentation. Real instruments (whatever those are..) become their own category of boring.

So, we take what Miike Snow offers; add some fancy-pants synths et voila. It is love.

Did I just blow your mind? Probably not. Either way tracks-on-tracks below, including a personally made SoundCloud rip of Brodinski’s remix (it’s my favorite, no surprises there).  Also, more Miike Snow remixes that weren’t featured here in my last Miike Snow remixes post. Mondays can be fun!

Arty – Open Space (Preview)
By Tach

Artem Stolyarov is the 22-year-old Russian trance producer who’s enchanted the world under the guise of his stage name Arty. His unique take on progressive trance and notable live mixing skills have been acknowledged in a major way by the likes of Armin Van Buuren and Above & Beyond who’ve featured him as an opener on their ASOT 550 and Group Therapy tours respectively. The Russian debuted his latest track Open Space on this Friday’s episode of Trance Around the World and has since released a four minute preview. The piece’s keyboard progression and glitchy, um, synth-thingie, are typical Arty; luckily, I’m not tired of his sound yet, so typical is fine by me.

Also coming up, Arty’s collaboration with BT, Must Be Love featuring vocals from Nadia Ali. No release date on that one yet, and there are still only ASOT rips floating around, but I’ve included a decent quality one below. There’s also a few other “lesser known” Arty favorites for your listening pleasure.

Open Space is set for release on Anjunabeats on June 18th. Anyone know how to say “too long” in Russian??

Vitalic
By LBL

Pascal Arbez-Nicolas, better known as Vitalic, has been making moves dirty & electric for more than a decade. Back in Fall 2001 he unleashed the grinding Poney Part 1 on discothèques all across Europe, and out of nowhere, the track became an overnight club hit. With dirty synths and swinging beats, Vitalic influenced the formation of “French electro” long before Justice’s Cross. The dance floor was never the same. Plus, the music video has puppies in it!

Fig. 1: puppies

For having been on the ground floor of dirty, Vitalic’s dark sound is woven with an irresistibly catchy playfulness; the first song that turned me on to him was Wooo, a listing, organic jam whose harmony has a bit of trouble keeping up with the tempo. When he chills it out, like in Station Mir 2099, his music takes on a texture that’s mysteriously futuristic, but still full of emotion.

Vitalic doesn’t seem to be producing a lot of original stuff lately (it’s been almost 5 years since his sophomore album) but he continues to be prolific. Recent remixes like Cardboard Lamb and Sabali show Vitalic moving toward a housier style; less noisy, but faithful to the gritty distortion of his original sound. I look forward to seeing how his style evolves next, because in my opinion, this underrated artist keeps getting better.

Deadmau5 ft. Chris James – The Veldt (Tommy Trash Remix) [Rip]
By Tach

Tommy Trash, though he may not seem the obvious choice for a remixer, has interpreted Deadmau5′s The Veldt with a decidedly excellent result. Pete Tong debuted the piece on his BBC radio show last night; it stole my heart at first listen. No release date has been mentioned thus far, but I’ve cut a four and a half minute rip from the show that’s below to stream and download. Though more subtle than some of his other remix work,  the Australian producer’s signature bass kick  is undeniably present.

I was floored by the amount of  T. Trash remix work I encountered while doing the legwork for this post, which must number in the hundreds of tracks. Just a note for those critics I’ve seen accusing Trash of over reliance on the synth sound from his originals Future Folk and The End.  Many of his Tommy’s best remixes have gone severely underrated as far as I’m concerned, so I’m jam-packing this post with rework.

If you missed my post on the original track The Veldt, its right here. Can’t wait for the release on this one… as Tong would say, it’s hot!
